# 396 US Park Unit (Fort Monroe, Hampton, VA)

October 30, 2011

That Fort Monroe will become the #396 US Park Unit under the Antiquities Act by the President Barack Obama on Tuesday November 1, 2011.

The history of the fort dates way back to settlement of Jamestown to historical place of refuges for slaves during the civil war. The base was decommission in Sept 2011 by the Federal Government. The property has not been turn over to the state, so the president was able to declared the property under the Antiquities Act. The entire community was backing to make this a National Park, since it was listed as a base closing in 2005.

I had visited the site in 2005 and the site is semi-accessible and has lots of potential to become a premier site to visit with its view overlooking the Chesapeake bay.

We are edging closer to the number 400 US Park unit, will it be the Harriet Tubman either in New York or Maryland, Great Falls National Park in Paterson Falls, NJ, Ronald Reagan boyhood home, in Dixon, IL  its anyone guess, in which park will be #400.
